This paper was originally written for SEMIOTICA, the JOURNAL OF THE INTERNATlONAL ASSOClATlON FOR SEMIOTIC STUDIES, a special edition edited by Paul Bouissac, University of Toronto (100-2/4, 1994). The same subject was also presented as a paper at the 'GLOBAL SPECIALISTS CONFERENCE ON ROCK ART' at the INDIRA GANDHI NATIONAL CENTRE FOR THE ARTS', Nov. 29 - Dec. 7. 1993, at New Delhi, India. The author would like to thank to all the organisers and members of this meeting for the very stimulating discussions. He became aware that rock-art data are the most promising sources for a more humane prehistory of the future.
