Instruction is in English. Studios, lectures and seminars will be led by Finnish and international architects, academics and artists. Students will be exposed to the depth and quality of Finnish and Nordic architecture, as well as to a range of issues in urban planning, landscape architecture, architectural technologies and product design. Master students will be encouraged to develop unconventional approaches and challenging conclusions in the field of architecture - from th theoretical to questions of methodology in design, from the making of objects and spaces in the Faculty workshops to collaborations with artists and artisans or reseach in wood technology. Visiting design critics and instructors will supplement the Faculty of Architecture. In 1996-97, there will be five international Program Visitors. The International Program is supported in its directions by an international Advisory Board, consisting of architects and educators. The Board meets annually during the Summer Reviews to critique Master student work and to evaluate the Program's overall accomplishments. The 1996-97 Advisory Board includes William Curtis, Sverre Fehn, Elizabeth Meyer, Michael Rotondi, Roland Schweitzer and Colin St. John Wilson. The Inernational Program's facilities are located at the Alvar Aalto-designed University of Technology in Otaniemi, just outside Helsinki, and at the Faculty studies and workshops in the Helsinki Cable Factory arts center. The architecture library in Otaniemi is the largest in Finland; accesss is also available to the research library and archives of the Museum of Finnish Architecture and the Alvar Aalto Archives in Helsinki. The Faculty of Architecture has an up-to-date micro-computer/CAD center. An applicant to the International Program must have a five-year Bachelor of Architecture degree, or comparable standing in an European architectural program or the equivalent foreign degree. Admissions requirements include: a completed application form, a portfolio of design work, a curriculum vitae, a statement of purpose, transcripts of previous or current degree programs, two letters of recommendation and a financial statement. If the applicant is not a native of an English-speaking country, evidence of English language competence must be provided, either by the submission of a language test result (TOEFL 550 minimum) or its equivalent. The Master of Architecture - International Progam is a tuition based course of graduate study. Tuition for the 1996-97 fifteen month period is 80,000 FIM (travel and living expenses are not included). The program desires students from all backgrounds and national origins. All sources of scholarship aid, grant support, and exchange fellowships will be investigated in order to assist accepted students in attending the Program. Recommendations in support of these efforts are available from th Director of Studies. The deadline for applications is February 15, 1996. Notification of acceptance will occur by March 15, 1996, to allow for visa applications, financial planning, housing arrangements and travel.
